Ickenham Cricket Club is pleased to announce that it has been accepted into the Jack Petchey Award scheme.

The Jack Petchey Foundation is a charitable foundation with Sir Jack Petchey, a leading UK businessman, as its founder and patron. The award scheme is part of the Foundation and seeks to promote youth development and participation within the London area for young people between the ages of 11-25.

What is the Award Scheme?

We have been accepted into the Gold Award scheme which allows for 9 cash awards to be awarded spread out over 12 months.

The scheme works by young people, Managers, Coaches, Senior Captains or Club members nominating an individual between the relevant ages to receive an award of £200 to be spent on an item(s) from a wish list of items pre-prepared by the club associated with youth activities within the club. The club's scheme administrator (in conjunction with a selection committee if required) decides on who the winner is.

The individual does not benefit financially from the award because, as already stated, the money has to be spent on a pre-prepared wish-list of items (see below). The individual benefits from the kudos of having his efforts and achievements recognised (see below).

What Can it be Spent On?

The award cannot be spent on a general club running costs, it cannot be donated externally, and the individual cannot benefit personally. It also must be spent on the item requested and cannot merely sit within Club funds preparing for a ‘rainy day’.

Possible expenditure can include, cricket kit and equipment, paid coaching sessions, team trips etc, so not just cricket within the club although, to be blunt, the more that is spent within the club obviously the more benefit the club will get.

How is the scheme audited and administered

Invoices must be retained on all expenditure in order to prove that all award money has been spent! It is quite possible that we will be audited. Certain simple records have to be maintained by the club's scheme administrator identifying award winners, reason for the award and what the award is spent on. Records have to be sent six monthly (on-line) to the Foundation.

Please note that the club is looking for somebody to help administer the scheme. This will involve collating the nominations and determining the monthly winners through a committee. You will also make appropriate returns and undertake general administration. Please contact if you are willing to help.

Who can win awards?

All young people involved with the club aged between 11 and 25. A member can only ever receive one award.

How Can an Award be Won?

It is important to stress that in relation to the Foundation's aims ideally the award should not be based on the best cricketing performance although exceptional feats may be honoured. The award is based on recognising achievement in terms of sportsmanship, overcoming adversity, participation, endeavour, improvement, good practice, charitable activities etc. It does not necessarily have to be cricket related or even take place within the club etc.

How is a player nominated?

Managers, coaches, senior captains, players and club members will all be able to nominate suitable candidates on a continual basis. This can be done via the completion of the online nomination form (click here) or in hard copy form from copies maintained in the clubhouse on the dedicated Jack Petchey notice board. If an on-line nomination is completed this will be automatically forwarded to the club's scheme administrator. If a hard copy nomination form is completed it should be placed in the nomination box located on the telephone table in the clubhouse.

What is the Award Scheme worth to ICC?

As we have been accepted onto the Gold award scheme this means that potentially the club could receive £1800 in additional funding during the year (9 awards x £200).

How are awards presented?

The awards must be presented on a regular basis by the club's scheme administrator or nominated person and in the most public forum possible in order that the young person is subject to maximum exposure (or embarrassment). The Friday colts' training night or prior to a home fixture in the instance of older recipients is ideal.

Here he or she will receive a certificate and a cheque payable to the club. The scheme is nationally recognised although operates only in London and provides benefits in terms of CVs or for university applications.

Additionally, at our yearly colts' presentations all award winners will be presented with a commemorative medallion and our regional scheme administrator, Rowena, will present if available.

How is it funded?

Prior to the season we had already been advanced about a third of the money. If we manage the scheme successfully for the first six months, the remaining amount will then be paid in advance during the second half of the year.

Leaders Award

Once a year the club will nominate and select an adult who has contributed most towards young people within the club. After selection they will also receive a commemorative medallion and certificate at the colts' presentations. This award used to attract an additional award of £1000, again to be spent on the club, but, unfortunately, this has now been rescinded due to financial constraints, although it could well be resurrected when finances allow.

The success of the award is entirely dependent on managers, senior captains, coaches, players and club members nominating individuals for awards. If this does not happen the scheme will collapse. It is vitally important for all to spread the message. If it does not function properly we are obliged to withdraw the club from the scheme.
