Chance to shine

Ickenham Cricket Club is proud to be an accredited supporter of the Government and ECB backed Chance to shine initiative

“Ask not what Schools can do for Cricket, but what Cricket can do for Schools”
Mervyn King.

Chance to shine will bring cricket to two million young people over ten years? But it is not in itself a campaign for cricket. The clear motivation behind Chance to shine lies in recognising the power of competitive team sports – and cricket in particular – to help young people develop skills and attitudes that will help them in all aspects of their future lives. Cricket plays a vital role in the education and well-being of young people from all communities, since cricket, played regularly in competition, gives opportunities to lead healthy, purposeful and balanced lives.

  • Cricket is the ultimate team game. It demands both individual and collective responsibility.
  • Cricket insists upon high standards of conduct and provides good role models.
  • Cricket teaches leadership and team-work, as well as strategic awareness and risk-taking.
  • Cricket is wholly inclusive and draws together people from all cultures and backgrounds. It gives opportunities to boys and girls, as well as to those with disabilities.
  • Cricket is able to reach all of our major ethnic communities in a way no other sport can.

Last year Ickenham Cricket Club supplied coaching facilities to a number of local schools bringing cricket to boys and girls who otherwise would not have had the opportunity. We plan to extend our involvement in this wothwhile cause during the 2008 season.
